Project Overview
Most developers, when the ground shifts under a project, find a reason why the work suffers. The brief changes, the setup isn't ideal, the access is difficult. When COVID hit mid-engagement and Venuehub moved everything to remote desktop, slow and unreliable and nobody's idea of a productive working environment, I had plenty of reasons. I didn't use them.
I was brought onto an existing two-person team as additional frontend support on a Laravel and Vue dashboard. One developer on the frontend, one on the backend, and the original expectation of on-site work. That expectation became impossible overnight. The work didn't.
I was hired as frontend, but the real value I added was that I understood both sides of the codebase. The frontend developer and the backend developer were working in separate lanes. I could see across both of them, bridge the gap, and stop integration decisions from stalling. It's the same role I've played on other projects: the developer who doesn't need the problem explained twice because they already understand where it's coming from.
Given the right access to a codebase, I don't need to be in the room. I never have. The output is what matters, and the output was consistently there, which is why the working relationship stayed strong not just with the client, but with the two developers I was working alongside. When the people in the trenches with you respect the work, that tells you something.
The engagement ran nine months. When COVID gutted hospitality budgets across the board, the project stalled. Not because of anything in the codebase or the team, but because the industry we were building for was in freefall. That's the context.
After the engagement ended, the client came back and asked me to return. They also brought me a second project off the back of the work. I turned down the return because I work remotely and they needed on-site. The second project didn't proceed because their client pulled out. But the fact that they came back at all says what it needs to say.
I work remotely, I work hourly, and I don't need managing. What you get is the work. Venuehub got nine months of it, through a pandemic, with no drop in quality. That's not a claim. That's a track record.The Challenge
